Class Description:

The world around us has changed, yet the creative approach to landscape photography has remained largely the same – until now. The Modern Landscape challenges students to remove the clutter, the obvious and the cliché from their landscapes to create memorable images with a distinct visual voice. By using negative space, scale and a restrained color palette, the modern landscape abstracts the obvious, subtracts the unnecessary and leaves behind the scene in only its purest form.

The diverse and breathtaking landscapes of Lake Superior have been photographed time and time again. This class will inspire working landscape photographers, as well as those new to the field, to create distinctive imagery that embraces the minimal while transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Through lectures, slideshows, critiques, and demonstrations, Jacob encourages students to distill the landscape into its unforgettable essence. In addition, the class will review the work of other contemporary landscape photographers and learn to define and establish their own unique voice in the medium. Shooting the early morning and late evening light, students will leave empowered with new useful skills that will bring their landscape photography to the next level.

Alissa Hessler, an art director and photo editor, will work with students on editing and sequencing their work, adding the final polish to their completed images. She will also assist attendees who are interested in developing their landscape work into a book and/or a concise body of work for exhibition.

In addition to the fieldwork, the class will hone their skills in the digital darkroom and will focus on developing and establishing a singular voice. The group will leave at the end of the week confident to shoot, critique, edit and sequence their own photography in new ways.
