Yellowstone Fog by Skip Whitcomb
  Yellowstone Fog by Skip Whitcomb
Class Description:

This workshop is designed to remove the imitative burden we all seem to start with and to introduce orchestration of the landscape, especially color harmony, for strong personal statements.  We are under no obligation to copy what is before us, that’s what the camera is designed to do.

Concentration will be on the intellectual process of interpreting landscape to “fit” your motive.  Emphasis will be placed on selecting which limited palette (of 3-6 colors) will best suit our concept.

Although this is an outdoor workshop much of the discussion will apply equally to studio work and procedures.  We will work on defining and developing what constitutes a strong pictorial concept and selection of only those elements in the landscape, which support that end.  Focus will be especially on color harmony, what it means, how it works, and how to select a limited palette for each individual painting. The ultimate goal is to help you think and create on a higher plane.  The small class size is intended to encourage enthusiastic discussions and questions dealing with our profession today...practical as well as intellectual.

*One assistant space available in this workshop! The assistant should be an experienced outdoor painter, familiar with plein air painting processes, tools and materials. He/she must also be comfortable working with and around groups of people. Ask about the discounted class fee in exchange for fulfillment of this position. Please call 715-747-2054 or email inquiries to for more information.*
