This 5-Day workshop will explore the fundamentals of shibori resist, traditional techniques to contemporary variations such as hand stitching to sewing machine stitch on a wide range of fabric surfaces and combinations of opposite fibers including cotton, silk, organza, and polyester. Yoshiko will be available to guide you through this exploration process.
Indigo dyeing with sustainable methods will be another focus of this workshop. Yoshiko will demonstrate how to make a safe and easy indigo vat, how to care for it, and use it efficiently for a long period. Students should prepare to learn and innovate with resist dyeing processes taking full advantage of quintessential blue colors. Participants are asked to bring small fabric in various fiber or other dye-able materials in different texture, pattern, and opacity/ transparency to gain own visual vocabulary. Yoshiko encourages you to bring works in progress for critique and possibly to continue working on during the session.
